Preoperative assessment
Every patient will have a detailed assessment at the transplant center to find out more about his health and check whether there are any underlying problems that could affect his suitability for the transplant. This usually involves having several tests which include
Blood and urine tests
Ultrasonography of the abdomen
Abdominal and peripheral vessel Doppler studies/ MRA or CT scan of the pelvis and legs
Cardiology assessment including ECG and Echocardiogram, Dobutamine Stress test and if required, Cardiac catheterization and Coronary angiography
Pulmonary assessment including Chest X-ray, Pulmonary function tests
Autoimmune markers
Immunological profiling including HLA genotyping
Psychology/ Psychiatric consultation
Tests for c-peptide/ insulin resistance and beta cell function
The patient will get an opportunity to meet various members of the transplant team during this assessment process and to find out more about the surgery.
