Pancreas Transplant Surgery

Diet And Nutrition

Patients’ may have loss of appetite after pancreas transplant. The appetite slowly improves with time. It is important to take a high protein diet to help with wound healing and recovery. The diet should be adjusted to keep pancreas healthy and functioning. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can help prevent many common post-transplant complications.

Our transplant team includes a nutrition specialist (dietitian) who can discuss and individualize the patient’s nutrition and dietary needs and answer any questions they might have after transplant.

Our dietitian will provide patients with several healthy food options and ideas to use in their nutrition plan. This may include:

  Eating small frequent meals

Eating at least five servings of fruits and green leafy vegetables each day

Eating lean meats, poultry and fish

Eating only moderate amounts of carbohydrates, sweets and fats

Having enough fiber in daily diet

Drinking low-fat milk or eating other low-fat dairy products to help maintain healthy calcium levels
