Diet And Nutrition
Patients’ may have loss of appetite after pancreas transplant. The appetite slowly improves with time. It is important to take a high protein diet to help with wound healing and recovery. The diet should be adjusted to keep pancreas healthy and functioning. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can help prevent many common post-transplant complications.
Our transplant team includes a nutrition specialist (dietitian) who can discuss and individualize the patient’s nutrition and dietary needs and answer any questions they might have after transplant.
Our dietitian will provide patients with several healthy food options and ideas to use in their nutrition plan. This may include:
Eating small frequent meals
Eating at least five servings of fruits and green leafy vegetables each day
Eating lean meats, poultry and fish
Eating only moderate amounts of carbohydrates, sweets and fats
Having enough fiber in daily diet
Drinking low-fat milk or eating other low-fat dairy products to help maintain healthy calcium levels
Restriction of potassium, phosphorous and magnesium intake
It is important to keep yourself well hydrated and drink at least 2-3 litres of water every day. Hydration keeps creatinine level low and helps proper functioning of the transplanted kidney
Healthy eating habits after transplant
Food should be cooked hygienically
Use boiled/ filtered water; Wash and cook in clean water
Avoid deep fried/ greasy foods
Do not eat food left overnight
Avoid partially cooked foods
Avoid raw or cold meat
Avoid raw or overripe fruits
Do not consume expired packaged food
If blood sugar is high, avoid sweets and fruits such as apples, mangoes etc.
