Deceased Pancreas Donation

The “Cross Match” Test

This is the most crucial test done before a pancreas (or kidney-pancreas) transplant. The cross match test involves a recent sample of patient’s blood and cells being checked for any antibody reaction to the blood and cells of the donor. Antibodies can react and attack the donor blood cells as if they were foreign germs trying to invade recipient’s body. This test is to see if there is compatibility and no reaction from patient’s antibodies.

Usually this test is ‘negative’, means that there has been no reaction and that it is safe to go ahead with the transplant. If the result is positive this means that there has been a reaction and the present organ is not suitable for this recipient. This does not mean that the said recipient will never have a transplant, but that he will have to wait longer for a better matched organ.
